Helping an addicted family member
By Newport Coast | December 19, 2007
One of the most stressful things one can deal with is addiction in the family. When it becomes obvious that professional help is necessary, there’s really no time to procrastinate - addiction can be a life or death matter.
The first step is to assess whether or not the family member is willing to quit on their own accord. This is the best possible situation, and in these cases an inpatient rehab facility should be contacted as soon as possible. It is common to encounter a bit of resistance as well, and at a certain point an intervention may become necessary.
At this time you should start researching rehab facilities. It’s often recommended to attend rehab away from the home town, and it’s not uncommon to fly cross country to attend a reputable rehab program. There are several advantages to this: first of all, relapse is less likely is the patient’s source of drugs is taken out of the picture (alcoholism patients excluded). Another reason traveling to attend rehab can be beneficial is the benefit of breaking an old routing and introducing some new scenery - this can be very refreshing.
A supportive family can make drug rehab a much more successful endeavor, and by taking the first step of finding a drug and alcohol rehab program, you’d be doing them a favor they’ll never forget.
