Dual diagnosis rehab vs. traditional drug rehab

By Newport Coast | December 21, 2007

Dual diagnosis rehab facilities take into consideration the entire picture of a patient’s mental state, whereas a traditional drug rehab program addresses the addiction alone. For some patients treating the addiction alone may work, but in the vast majority of cases there are other factors at work which must be treated if the patient wants to remain sober in the long run.

Dual diagnosis drug rehab programs are equipped to treat more than just the addiction, they treat the entire individual. This is similar to a holistic approach, but it has a stronger quantitative psychological basis. Individuals suffering from depression and anxiety are often predisposed to addiction. If these individuals end up in a chemically dependent state, their other disorders must also be addressed. With the proper tools to deal with both addiction and underlying psychological disorders, patients are much less likely to relapse.

The concept of a dual diagnosis rehab program goes beyond treating anxiety and depression in conjunction with drug addiction. These programs are geared towards addressing elements of a patient’s life that could be improved, to reduce the chances of a relapse. Many dual diagnosis rehab programs also utilize holistic techniques to aid in recovery. Check out Newport Coast Recovery for an example of a state licensed dual diagnosis rehab facility for men.
