Why does relapse occur?

By Newport Coast | December 17, 2007

Relapsing occurs when an individual begins to abuse alcohol or other drugs after a period of sobriety. Most people trying to treat their addictions without outside support relapse many times, sometimes this leads them to believe they are stuck with their drug addiction forever. These individuals often attend alcoholics anonymous meetings or narcanon meetings and even gets sponsors and family support. Still, the power of addiction is so strong that these individuals are rarely able to cure themselves without relapsing. Without inpatient drug rehab, it can take these users many repeated cycles of sobriety and relapse before they are better - many of these individuals eventually throw away the idea of quitting.

Inpatient drug and alcohol rehab can help these individuals beat their addictions and teach them how to prevent relapse. High quality drug rehab programs can provide a full staff of counselors and therapists to assess each individual’s situation and come up with an intensive rehab plan.

Patients in drug rehab facilities can focus on recovering from their addictions full time. The benefit of using a drug rehab program instead of trying to quit on one’s own is that it can be done in 30-90 days. If the patient is determined and willing to work, inpatient rehab is generally very successful. Trying to quit without a rehab program can take much longer, and relapse is much more common.

Newport Coast Recovery is a drug rehab program that uses advanced counseling techniques to help patients avoid future relapses.

Here are a few factors that can trigger relapse:

-Physical pain from an injury that requires medication
Often times patients will relapse when trying to treat their pain with narcotics which will cause them to relapse. You should always tell your doctor about your chemical dependency issues so they can treat you with alternative means, if possible.

Boredom or unemployment
Boredom can often cause individuals to revert back to their old ways. Not having a job can be an issue in the same sense as well. The advantage of a drug rehab program for many people is that the skills taught can prevent relapse, which can cause trouble in the workplace. Drug rehab programs teach individuals to use their time constructively and to avoid situations that trigger impulses to use drugs.

Being around others who use drugs
This is a common cause of relapse. Being around friends or in situations (like parties) where drugs are available, or even when people are talking about drugs can cause relapse. Drug rehab is a great help here, because it takes addicted individuals out of their usual environment for 30-90+ days. During the rehab period, the patient isn’t exposed to situations where other people are using drugs. After months of sobriety, relapse is less likely.

Feelings of anxiety, depression or other negative emotions
Stressful and emotional situations can often cause relapse. In a drug rehab program, patients learn to deal with their emotions in healthy ways. Additionally, dual diagnosis drug rehab programs can address issues like anxiety and depression so they don’t cause future relapses. Dual diagnosis drug rehab is vital if an individual has an underlying psychological disorder besides the addiction - if this goes untreated relapse is likely to occur.

It’s important to remember that addicted individuals have a whole lot of resources. Narcanon meetings and AA meetings can definitely be helpful in establishing a long term routine of sobriety, but don’t forget that it will take more than meetings alone to fight addiction successfully.
