Warning Signs of Alcoholism

By Newport Coast | December 30, 2007

There are a lot of warning signs that might be useful in identifying alcoholism in yourself or in someone you know. Alcoholism is a serious disease that requires immediate treatment. If you’d like information on finding a drug rehab center that can help address your addiction, contact Newport Coast Recovery.

-Warning Signs of Alcoholism- #1: Drinking alone and Drinking Secretly.
Drinking secretly implies that the individual is aware there is a problem with their drinking. Drinking secretly means the user doesn’t wish for others to know how much and how often they drink, presumably because there is a problem with that amount. Drinking
alone isn’t necessarily a problem, however it can often increase over a period of time until it becomes a problem.

-Warning Signs of alcoholism- #2: Poor nutrition and diet
Deceased intake of food and lack of attention towards a healthy diet can be a sign of heavy alcohol intake. Alcohol can suppress the appetite and cause malnutrition and other dietary issues.

-Warning Signs of alcoholism- #3: Justifying, or making excuses for drinking
Alcoholics can always come up with a reason to drink: a tough day, a good day, anger, stress, boredom, etc. These become excuses for regular drinking. Alcoholics often use these excuses to justify their drinking to themselves and others. Drug rehab can specifically address this issue.

-Warning Signs of alcoholism- #4: Withdrawal signs after waking
Trembling, nausea and headaches are commonly seen in alcoholics in the morning. This is different than a typical ‘hangover’ and is often accompanied by a need to consume alcohol in the morning, often before work or other responsibilities.

-Warning Signs of alcoholism- #5: Violence or rage associated with drinking
Encountering frequent violence associated with alcohol intake is a good indicator of alcoholism. This can be dangerous and lead to many other problems. This is often a good time to consider a drug rehab program, before legal and other problems ensue.

-Warning Signs of alcoholism- #6: Lack of attention to physical appearance
Poor hygiene is often associated with alcoholism. Alcoholics often neglect their oral health as well as keeping their clothes clean, shaving, bathing regularly, etc. It’s not uncommon for these individuals to perpetually smell like alcohol.

-Warning Signs of alcoholism- #7: Denial and anger when confronted about alcohol use
It’s not uncommon for individuals suffering from alcoholism to become very angry or defensive when confronted about their potential drinking problems. This is accompanied by an unwillingness to get help for their problem or even discuss it with a counselor or anyone else. If you need help with an intervention or in finding a drug rehab program, this is often the time to do it.

-Warning signs of alcoholism- #8: High tolerance to alcohol
If you require more drinks to ‘feel buzzed’ than you used to, it’s a good warning sign of alcoholism. Tolerance to alcohol is accompanied by the biochemical changes brought on by increased alcohol intake.
