How addictions occur

By Newport Coast | March 2, 2008

The process of addiction generally isn’t obvious to the drug user - it can be very insidious. While most people believe that the process of drug addiction begins with the first drug use, in many cases it begins even before this.

Many individuals have anxiety, depression or other psychological disorders. In some cases, these factors make an individual more susceptible to addiction. In other cases, an individual may simply be under a lor of stress and turn to alcohol or other drugs for temporary relief.

Once an individual begins to use drugs more often, the process of addiction will progress; the neurochemistry of an individual’s brain will be altered (in some cases, permanently). The individual may build a tolerance to the drug, so they’ll use it more frequently and in greater volumes.

Certain individuals are more susceptible to addiction due to family history and genetics. It’s difficult to say why some individuals will become addicted to a substance like alcohol, while others can enjoy it in moderation. Addiction is treatable, but once it occurs in an individual, treatment is necessary to beat it. True addictions don’t simply ‘go away’

Inpatient drug rehab is the best option for individuals suffering from addiction. The earlier rehab is sought, the better - an addiction becomes more difficult to treat as it progresses.
